Our Adult School provides classes and workshops to serve the interests and needs of adults living in the Anderson Valley community. Primary programs are free of charge and include English Conversation (basic and intermediate levels), Citizenship, GED/High School Equivalency, Spanish Literacy and Parent Education. We also offer a variety of general Community Enrichment classes (see below), for which students pay a fee. Classical Music Appreciation (Instructor: Gabriela Lena Frank)
Students will be simultaneously grounded in the music of the “masters” of the western past as well as the music of our eclectic contemporary times. On at least two occasions, internationally renowned performers will visit to talk about their careers and play live music. Depending on enrollment, the class may be conducted in a freely bilingual English/Spanish format. Mondays, 6pm-7:30pm, February 27th -- April 24th(8 classes). Sliding scale for full course: $25-$150, no one turned away for lack of funds. AV High School Band Room.
Beginning Spanish Conversation (Instructor: Nora Jimenez)
Learn everyday Spanish communication skills from a native speaker, in a fun and interactive classroom setting. This class is designed for students with little or no Spanish skills. Mondays, 5:30-7:30pm, March 14th-June 13th (12 classes). $96 + around $40 for student books. Please order books in advance of class. (Info given when you call to register.) Website Development (Instructor: Paul Soderman)
This class will cover the basic elements required to build a working website on the world wide web. Students will use free wordpress design tools along with html computer language to design and create their own website for personal use. Basic layout and website organization will be studied. Hosting services will be discussed. Students should have basic computer skills (making text files, using web browser etc). Thursdays, 6-7:30pm March 8th - April 5th (5 weeks). $30-$60 sliding scale; $18 for students. AV High School Room 1.
Basic Computer Skills and Troubleshooting (Instructor: Mike Crutcher)
Learn the basics of using a computer and the internet. Lessons adapted to meet students' needs and interests. Tuesdays, April 18-May 23(6 weeks) 6:00-7:30, $36. AV High School Room 1.
Nature Observation and Botanical Drawing (Instructor: Jade Paget)
In this class we will explore nature journaling and observation, botanical drawing and field sketching. The class will meet in various outdoor locations, weather permitting, and focus on using drawing to enrich observation skills, not just create "pretty" pictures. Jeet Kune Do: Self Defense (Instructor: Colin Harris)
"Bruce Lee’s art of fighting without fighting." Using training in defensive tactics, students will learn to relax, focus, exercise, and defend themselves. The class will take techniques from different martial art styles such as Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Jiu Jitsu, and Kickboxing while emphasizing the value of stretching and breath control. All levels welcome; no experience or uniform necessary. Thursdays from 6:15 - 7:30 p.m. March 9 - April 27. $70 per student plus $15 equipment fee (hand wraps etc.) for 8 weeks. Classroom TBD
Mixed Media Painting and Sculpture (Instructor: Colin Harris)
Students are encouraged to bring old magazines, pictures, driftwood, and other interesting objects to class for creating new artwork. Different types of media will be explored using various techniques and mediums. In this course, people will have the opportunity to experiment with collages, encaustic styles, general painting, wood carving and found art sculptures. Wednesday April 26- June 7, $65, 7 sessions.
