Bilingual Specialist – Classified

Definition
Under general supervision of the principal, subject to the day-to-day direction of classroom teachers, to assist teachers in supervising classroom activities of students; to relieve teachers of routine clerical and authorized instructional duties; to perform related duties as required.

Salary
Bilingual Specialist $14.13 - $15.06 an hour per Column D on the Classified Salary Schedule. 

Benefits
Employee will be a member of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) to which both the employee and AVUSD contribute. Employee will receive Health, Dental and Vision insurance for employee and their family.

Work Hours/Year
7.5 hours per day, 5 days per week, 10 months per year, pending successful fingerprint clearance and submission of a recent tuberculosis test as required by the California Education Code.

Bilingual Specialist

Definition

Under the direction of the Bilingual Coordinator and the site administrator and in cooperation with the classroom teachers, to present and plan lessons that will make school work meaningful to non-English speaking students; to include the student’s family in their education; to perform related duties as required.

Examples of Duties

Translate a variety of materials including letters to parents, classroom materials, testing devices, and student report cards; tutor non-English speaking students by planning and presenting lessons in English and/or another language; present teacher planned lessons; serve as a parent-school relations liaison by visiting, telephoning, or writing parents of non-English speaking students; administer tests as required. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education

AA degree or Pass District Academic Proficiency Examination

Pass District Bilingual Proficiency Examination at 90% Proficiency

Experience

Previous experience working with non-English speaking children

Knowledge of

Basic learning activities

Correct English and other language required usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Ability to

Communicate in a second language with correct usage of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and subject matter taughtDeal pleasantly and efficiently with students and school personnel.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience

Have training in English as a Second Language
