Welcome Back!

August 10, 2020

Dear Parents,
I hope you and your family are healthy. As a reminder, Anderson Valley Unified School District has postponed the first day of school until Tuesday, August 25 due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. As always, student safety is the district’s top priority so we will begin the new school year with distance learning until further notice. We learned a lot about the challenges students and parents experienced last year and are working hard to make distance learning better. This letter provides some general information about what to expect at the beginning of the school year. Soon, you will be receiving another letter from your child's teacher, that will give more specific details.

Distance Learning

Most of the students’ assignments will be digital. Using Chromebooks to access the digital versions of our curriculum along with educational apps and websites will allow teachers to assign activities that best meet the student’s academic needs. Also, it will allow teachers to determine student understanding more quickly in order to make modifications and give additional support as needed. The concerns regarding the amount of screen time associated with digital assignments will be taken into consideration. Teachers will be providing activities that do not require the use of a computer. Other assignments will allow students to be outside to get fresh air and be physically active.

Please be aware that each school day will begin with a class meeting using Google Meet at 8:30. Attendance will be taken and the teacher will discuss the assignments for that day. Teachers will also be using Google Meet daily to deliver direct instruction. There will be additional meetings, facilitated by the teacher or instructional assistant, in order to provide further support, guidance, and tutoring.

Student Materials, Technology, and Internet Access

Student materials, including a Chromebook laptop, will be available for pickup before the start of school. The specific dates that you will be able to get the materials will be included in the letter from your child’s teacher. We are aware of the challenges that families have with internet access. The District's goal is to provide an internet hotspot device to each family that does not have internet access.

We Can Do This!

Our community has experienced many difficulties throughout the years, and we have always supported each other during those hard times. Now more than ever the families of Anderson Valley will need to work together to support each other to meet the educational needs of your children. If you have any questions, please contact the school at 707-895-3010.
